| Professor | Michiko Takada Professor Profile: Graduated from Waseda University Faculty of Law (Bachelors of Law) in 1991. Worked in Toshiba Corporation Law Department in charge of international contract negotiation (1991-1996). After retirement from Toshiba, learned E-J Legal Translation degree at Babel University, and successfully passed Babel Professional Translation Examination. Engaged in E-J and J-E translation of legal documents as a freelance translator and reviewer (1998-present). Translated book: “My Days at Columbia Law School” by Douglas Freeman. Involved in Distance Education of Babel University Professional School of Translation since 2003. |

| Course Summary | Learn how to resolve various legal issues while working as a translator. | ||||||||||||
| How this course was developed | The text that laid out the framework for this course, "Translation Legal Knowledge for Translators", was first developed and taught by the current dean, Yoshiharu Ishida, and published in Babel University's student targeted magazine "Babel Beat" and "BUC Journal". When Babel University Professional School of Translation was established in 2001, this text was used to shape the course, thus using the same name. In 2007 professor Michiko Takada further revised and took over instruction of this course. | ||||||||||||
| Course Objective | Have students learn how to deal with legal problems: how to draft a written agreement when registering for a translation company or when being hired; how to collect overdue translation fees; what type of contracts is needed when asking for translation permission from an overseas author, etc. | ||||||||||||

| Grade Evaluation and Course Requirement | Assignments for all 4 lectures are required. There will be no final exam for this course. Grades will be evaluated on the scores of the assignments from grades A to F. Score for each assignment will be given when returning the last assignment. Submission papers will be returned with the evaluation sheet, which states evaluation marking and comments as well as corrections with rubrics. *Minimum Course Requirement: B or above |
