| Professor | Hiroyuki Usuki Professor Profile: Graduated Tokyo Agricultural University Department of Agriculture (majored in Zymology) in 1964. Worked at Chugai Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. Had charged filing foreign patent application at the Patent Department of Chugai for 15 years. Engaged in research and development of diagnostic products, and post-marketing surveillance of new drug for further 15 years and more in Chugai (1964-2003). Worked at US Drug Information Association Inc. (2003-2007). Experienced Vice Chairman and member of committees of Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers’ Association and others. Worked as a freelance translator specializing in Chemistry, Pharmaceutical, Medical, and Biology since 2007. Involved in distance education and training at Babel University Professional School of Translation since 2011. |

| Course Summary | Translate Japanese into English and vice versa using case studies with sample chemical patent specifications and particular emphasis in pharmaceuticals. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| How this course was developed | This course was established as one of the multiple courses on patent translation as Babel University created the current Patent, Technical, and Medical Translation Major, itself based on the former Technical and Scientific Translation Major. Babel University commissioned the development of this course to Mr. Hiroshi Usuki, who has extensive experience in patent application in the Patent Sector of Chugai Pharmaceutical Co. Professor Usuki developed the course after detailed discussions with Babel University. The course was first made available in 2011. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Course Objective | Have students obtain skills and know-how of medical/ pharmaceutical translation both in EJ and JE, by repeating case studies on patent application documents in mainly pharmaceutical field. While there are guidelines for writing patent specifications, due to the convention of technical area in question, historical background of the application, and preference of applicant, there are various formats. Each case always contains particular items (objective, construction, and effect), which specify the applied patent. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
